Woman Killed After Driving Head-On Into Phoenix Bus

Phoenix police is investigating a fatal traffic collision between a small passenger car and a city bus after the car went into on-coming traffic.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, just after 9:00 a.m., officers respond to a vehicle collision involving a small passenger vehicle and a city bus. When they arrived, they found both vehicles in the roadway with significant damage. Officers found a woman, later identified as 31-year-old Melody Stewart, in the driver seat of the small passenger car. The fire department responded provided aid to Stewart, but she died from her injuries on scene.

There were multiple passengers on the bus and three individuals were checked by the fire department after complaining of injury. One male was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; the other two declined further medical attention.

Detectives learned the passenger car was heading northbound on 19th Avenue from Cactus Road when it veered into the southbound lanes and onto oncoming traffic. The vehicle collided into the west curb just before colliding with a city bus, which was heading southbound on 19th Avenue.

The investigation remains open as detectives process the evidence.
