Poker Players Put Out By Monsoon, Talking Stick Evacuated

A severe storm and flooding early Saturday morning caused Talking Stick Resort’s main generators and back-up generators to malfunction, resulting in the complete loss of power across the property. Hundreds of people including all guests were immediately evacuated.

Reservations have been halted and all property events have been cancelled until further notice. Guests have been relocated to nearby hotels.

The resort is expected to be closed “through Tuesday of next week.”

The 14th Annual Arizona State World Poker Championship was underway. According to the casino’s website, “Should Talking Stick Resort be able to resume operations by 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14, the Championship will finish out the tournament for those players who finished Day 1A with chips. Players who are unable to resume play on Tuesday will be refunded their entry fee plus dealer appreciation fee.”

Steps to address the individual circumstances of the guests who were on the gaming floor at time of the evacuation are also being implemented. Individuals who exited the property with gaming chips can exchange their chips for cash the moment the hotel reopens. Slot machine players who were unable to redeem slot tickets can also come to the property upon reopening and contact a slot shift manager on duty.
