Gubernatorial candidate Ken Bennett has qualified for Clean Elections money after a judge ruled that the Secretary of State’s Office had to open the electronic portal through which contributions are made on Monday. The portal was opened from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Bennett’s organization had contributors ready to give.
“We did it! Appointment tomorrow 10 am at SOS office. What an effort – I am humbled and grateful. VOTE for Bennett,” tweeted Bennett.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Connie Contes ruled in Bennett’s favor during a hearing that began at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Contes said that it is “clear that everyone is surprised by what appears to be to be a programming” issue. Bennett’s supporters were essentially denied the ability to contribute the $5 necessary to qualify for Clean election campaign funding due to that programming issue.

Bennett blamed Secretary of State Michele Reagan for not being able to qualify for public funding after the Secretary of State’s Office website for Clean Elections funding stopped taking donations at 5 p.m. last Tuesday.
Bennett had just over 2,800 qualifying contributions, short of the 4,000 needed to qualify for $800,000 in Clean Election funding.
