Man Dies From Injuries Sustained In Tucson Collision

On the evening of October 15, 2018, the Tucson Police were advised that 20-year-old Hunter Beckhorn had passed away from the injuries he sustained in a collision that occurred in the evening of October 16, 2018 in Midtown Tucson.

On September 15, 2018, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of E. Grant Road and N. Alvernon Way for a serious injury collision involving several vehicles and multiple pedestrians. Two of the drivers involved and three pedestrians were transported to a local hospital with serious to life-threatening injuries.

Detectives were able to determine that a white 2004 Mazda M6 Station Wagon was traveling southbound on Alvernon Way at a high rate of speed. As the Mazda approached the intersection of Alvernon and Grant, the light for north and southbound traffic turned red. Witnesses advised that the Mazda swerved into the northbound lanes of traffic to go around the vehicles that were stopping for the red light. The Mazda then ran through the red light (southbound in the northbound lanes) and then swerved back into the southbound lanes. As the Mazda re-entered the southbound lanes, it rear ended a silver 2008 Jeep Patriot, causing the Jeep to hit a third vehicle and then finally come to rest on the western sidewalk of Alvernon. After the Mazda hit the Jeep, the Mazda spun out of control, jumped over the west curb, skid across the sidewalk and went through a covered bus stop where three people were sitting. The Mazda then continued southbound and struck a business sign before coming to rest on the sidewalk.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the adult male driver of the Jeep succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. He was identified as 75-year-old James Deshler. Several hours later, one of the pedestrians passed away from injuries sustained during the collision. He was identified as 65-year-old Gary Goodboy.

The adult male driver of the Mazda was treated for minor injuries. The adult male driver of the third vehicle was not injured.

Speed appears to be an obvious factor in the collision. No signs of impairment were found. The investigation into this collision is ongoing and at this time there have been no arrests or citations issued
