Bicyclist Struck, Killed In Tucson Collision

The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating a fatal bicycle collision that took the life of 69-year-old John M. Shaul on Saturday evening in the 700 block of E. 22nd Street.

On October 27, 2018, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Tucson Police and members of the Tucson Fire Department were dispatched to E. 22nd Street and S. Tyndall Avenue for a report of a serious-injury bicycle collision. Upon arrival, Mr. Shaul was found unresponsive. Tucson Fire immediately transported Mr. Shaul to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Detectives with the Tucson Police Traffic Unit responded to continue the investigation. Detectives determined the driver of the vehicle was westbound on 22nd St. in the left lane between Euclid Avenue and Tyndall Avenue. Mr. Shaul was riding an electric bicycle eastbound and made a left-hand turn to go northbound in front of oncoming traffic when he was struck by a primer gray 1993 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck. The investigation revealed that impairment was not a factor in the collision.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Mr. Shaul succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
This is an on-going investigation. No charges or citations have been issued at this time. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call 88-CRIME.
