Building a Better Phoenix is taking a definitive step towards stopping the “destructive billion-dollar expansion of the light rail throughout the city of Phoenix.” The grassroots group is filing their petitions with 40,000 signatures of residents in support of the Building a Better Phoenix Initiative.

The group argues that “instead of building an outdated and costly light rail system, the money would be used for other much needed infrastructure improvements throughout our community.”

The grassroots group claims that the expansion of light rail in Phoenix will:

• Increase traffic congestion, crime and cause gentrification in culturally sensitive communities

• Reduce Central Avenue in South Phoenix from 4 lanes to 2

• Spend 40% of the city’s transportation tax revenue to serve less than 1% of the population that use light rail

• Lead to years of aggravating construction and roadway problems that will bankrupt many small business owners
