NOGALES — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Nogales commercial crossing have seized a total of nearly 3,300 pounds of marijuana and methamphetamine since Tuesday with a street value of about $2.5 million.
A 35-year-old Mexican national driving a semitruck at the Mariposa crossing Tuesday afternoon was referred for secondary inspection. Officers then located 190 bundles of marijuana weighing 2,900 pounds concealed within a shipment of charcoal.
That marijuana shipment had an estimated street value of $1.5 million, said a CBP release.
The following day a 48-year-old Mexican national driving a semitruck with an empty trailer was arrested, after a K-9 inspecting the trailer indicated the presence of narcotics. Officers found more than 300 packages of methamphetamine within a floor compartment. The drugs weighed more than 360 pounds, with an estimated street value of more than $1 million.
Both drivers were remanded to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
The semitrucks were seized.
