Phoenix male arrested for allegedly stabbing woman to death in vehicle

PEORIA — Fernando Acosta, a 25-year-old Phoenix male, was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault he allegedly stabbed a woman to death in a vehicle, which left the roadway, crashed into a fence and came to a stop on the Peoria Canal embankment.

A white Lexus was on northbound Loop 101 at about 6:55 a.m. Friday, near the Thunderbird Road exit, when it went through the dry canal embankment and collided with the right-of-way fence, said a release from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Witnesses told police that the vehicle’s occupants were involved in an altercation in which the male stabbed the female. Several people stopped to assist after the vehicle stopped.

Peoria Police officers and Arizona state troopers were sent to the scene to investigate the incident.

Acosta and the victim were transported to a hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead.

Acosta was booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail.
