Safford man gets 35-year prison term for planned sex assault on teen

TUCSON – A Safford man, Lawrence James Halamek, was sentenced to 35 years’ in prison followed by lifetime supervised release after being found guilty by a federal jury of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

Halamek is also required to register as a sex offender.

According to the Department of Justice, the evidence at trial showed that in December 2016, Halamek picked up a minor child from her bus stop and transported her to a remote area in New Mexico, with the intent of sexually assaulting her. With the help of an Amber Alert, the two were located the following day.
