FLAGSTAFF — A former NAU student, Steven Jones, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and three counts of aggravated assault on Thursday for a 2015 fatal Flagstaff shooting. Prosecutors say the victim’s family approved of the deal.

Jones is facing between 5 and ten years in prison.

Jones has claimed that he was under attack by a group of rival fraternity members when he fired his gun. According to the court record, Jones and two of his fraternity’s pledges were targeted after they rang the doorbell of an apartment and ran away. Before shooting and killing Colin Brough, Jones was reportedly assaulted by the rivals.

Jones claimed he didn’t mean to hurt anyone and that the was simply trying to “stop the immediate threat that was coming at me.”
