YUMA – Border Patrol Agent Travis J. Carter is being hailed as a hero for his swift action while off-duty last week. Agent Carter was attending his daughter’s soccer practice when he ran to deliver lifesaving medical care to a bicyclist who had been hit and seriously wounded in a collision with a vehicle.

When Agent Carter, a certified paramedic and Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) operator, was informed of the incident he ran to the scene and found the male victim in the middle of the road.

Agent Carter acted quickly to tend to the large bone-deep wound above the victim’s left knee that was bleeding from a suspected femoral artery laceration. With the help of a bystander, Agent Carter applied pressure to the wound in an effort to prevent the victim from bleeding to death.

Agent Carter got a tourniquet from Yuma Police, and cared for the victim until Yuma Fire Department paramedics arrived. Agent Carter then helped them prepare the victim for transport, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“These are the reasons why I joined this agency, acquiring the platform and training necessary to make a difference in the lives of the ones I come in contact with,” said Agent Carter.” “We do not have the advantage of choosing the type of situations we respond to, but we do have the benefit of choosing how we respond.”

“Agent Carter’s quick thinking, ability to react in high-stress situations and preparedness saved this man’s life,” said Yuma Sector’s Acting Chief Patrol Agent Carl Landrum. “His expertise and training highlights the adaptability and first-response capabilities of U.S. Border Patrol agents in our community—on and off duty, I’m proud of Agent Carter’s actions.”
