2 Confirmed Coronavirus Cases At Luke Air Force Base

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein said on March 18 that there have been seven confirmed cases of the new coronavirus to date among active-duty personnel, that includes two individuals from Luke Air Force base.

In a Facebook message, Brigadier General Todd D. Canterbury, USAF Commander of the 56th Fighter Wing announced details of the cases and the actions officials are taking to protect others:

Two individuals from Luke AFB were confirmed positive today with COVID-19. Due to the actions of healthcare providers at the 56th Medical Group, the members and their families have been isolated in their home since first showing symptoms. I ask all of you to remain calm as we work to safeguard our Airmen and families and preserve combat capabilities.

Luke’s Health Protection Condition (HPCON) has changed to BRAVO. Airmen and families are encouraged to increase public health vigilance associated with COVID-19. In an effort to provide weekend coverage, the 56th Medical Group is going to be open during normal business hours Saturday and Sunday. All Luke AFB personnel should continue to emphasize standard precautions as outlined by the CDC.

If you suspect exposure to someone with COVID-19, self-isolate as soon as possible and inform your chain of command. If you feel you or a family member has COVID-19 symptoms (temperature >100.4 (fever), cough, or shortness of breath), please call central appointments at 623-856-2273. You will be booked with a same-day virtual appointment to be triaged. After duty hours contact the Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-874-2273.

We are continuing to refine guidance and procedures, and will update you with specific changes as soon as possible.

Effective immediately I am directing a 4-Day Pass for assigned military personnel and instituting civilian min-manning Thursday through Sunday, 19-22 March. Fighter Country will return to operations Monday (23 March). While I have determined that all Thunderbolts are mission essential, I recognize the unique hardships many are faced with during this unprecedented time; and have provided commanders with both guidance and authority to place assigned personnel (Military and Civilian) in alternate duty status aimed at providing each of you time and space to resolve those. Please make sure you communicate your situation with your commander in order to determine your status ASAP. During this time, and until further notice, maximize social distancing and care for your families while executing our mission.
