Mohave County Man Arrested For Deadly Hatchet Attack

MOHAVE COUNTY – A Mohave Valley man, Nicholas Paul Umphress, has bee arrested for a deadly hatchet attack.

According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, detectives arrested the 33-year-old Umphress for felony 1st Degree Murder.

On Thursday, at approximately 9:11 p.m, officers responded to a call about an assault with a hatchet at a residence in the 1200 block of Vacation Dr. When deputies arrived on scene Umphress approached them. He was detained and deputies entered the residence. Deputies the 33-year-old Victor Hernandez, also of Mohave Valley, deceased with obvious trauma to the head.

Deputies saw that the floor was flooded with water as if someone had tried to clean the area.

Witnesses told officers that Umphress had been acting strange and pacing in the living room before the allegedly unprovoked attack. Investigations revealed Umphress struck the victim multiple times with the hatchet and then attempted to clean up the scene before law enforcement arrived.
