Tucson Police Identify Suspect In Officer-Involved Shooting In Santa Cruz River Wash

The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating an officer-involved shooting that took the life of Charles Robert Arviso on October 28, 2020, just before 3:30 p.m., on Tucson’s south side.

According to Tucson Police, officers responded to the area of 1550 W. Valencia Road for the report of a shooting. When officers arrived they found the victim near his vehicle. While speaking with him, officers learned the victim was attempting to pull out of the parking lot when he was confronted by Arviso, who was armed with a handgun. During the confrontation, Arviso fired his weapon striking the victim’s vehicle and fled from the area. Responding officers began searching the area for Arviso. During their search, officers were flagged down by a second victim at 6441 S. Midvale Park Road. The second victim told officers that Arviso approached him and pointed a handgun at him before running towards the Santa Cruz Riverbed.

As the search for Arviso continued towards the riverbed, officers heard two gunshots fired in their direction. Officers then saw Arviso in the riverbed with a handgun. Officers gave numerous commands to Arviso to drop the weapon and he responded by pointing the handgun in the direction of officers.

One of the officers at the scene then discharged his weapon striking Arviso.

Detectives with the Tucson Police Violent Crimes Unit and sergeants with the department’s Office of Professional Standards Unit are investigating the incident.
