Yavapai County Deputy Shoots, Kills Armed Woman

SEDONA — A woman, Wendy Jones, who was brandishing a firearm, was shot and killed on Saturday in Sedona by a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call in the area of 55 Cathedral Rock Drive in the Village of Oak Creeks at around 6:50 p.m. The 56-year-old Jones allegedly discharged a firearm.

When deputies arrived on the scene, Jones allegedly confronted the deputies outside of her residence armed with a handgun. After multiple attempts at de-escalation and negotiations as well as numerous verbal commands to drop the weapon, Jones brandished the firearm. In response, a patrol sergeant and 16-year veteran of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office fired a single shot striking Jones.

Jones was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
