Mesa Police Arrest Man Who Violently Assaulted Stranger “Just Because”

When Sergio Gutierrez De Niz was asked by Mesa Police officers why he violently assaulted a complete stranger, he responded, “just because.”

According to the Mesa Police Department, on the evening of February 15, officers responded to The Olive Press, located at 720 S. Mesa Dr. for a report of a resident assaulting another resident with a glass bottle.

When they arrived on the scene, officers found the victim lying on the ground outside of the facility. The victim had blood all around his head and on the ground beneath him.

Officers provided medical care to the laceration on the top of the victim’s head. The victim was taken to the hospital where he received staples to close the wound.

The victim identified the 22-year-old Gutierrez De Niz as the person who hit him with the glass bottle while he was seated. The victim said Gutierrez De Niz then proceeded to punch him.

Several witnesses also identified Gutierrez De Niz and said they saw him strike the victim with the bottle.

Gutierrez De Niz was arrested for one count of Aggravated Assault with a Dangerous Instrument, ARS 13-1204A2, a class 3 felony. He is being held on a $20,000 bond.
