Uncivil Flake To Discuss Civic Engagement In The Digital Age

Former Sen. Jeff Flake and former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch hold hands briefly during a "Democracy, Civility and Freedom of Expression" discussion in 2020.

TUCSON, AZ — Kicking off a series of conversations around the impact of new digital technologies on civic engagement, former U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona will join UArizona Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation Elizabeth “Betsy” Cantwell to discuss the evolution and impact of political dialogue in an era spanning C-SPAN to Twitter on Monday.

Registered attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions and engage with Flake and Cantwell through an online Q-and-A.

Author of  “Conscience of a Conservative: A Rejection of Destructive Politics and a Return to Principle,” the lobbyist-turned-lawmaker, Flake, left office after serving six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and 6 years in U.S. Senate. He opted not to run again after his poll numbers showed he was wildly unpopular with Arizona voters.

Future Civic Engagement in the Digital Age events include:

  • October: “The Impact of Media on Civil Engagement”
  • November: “The Spread of Mis/disinformation via Social Media Around Elections”
  • December: “Citizen Engagement and Participation”
