On Sunday, October 10, 2021, at approximately 5:13 PM, the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle versus bicyclist collision in the 10300 Block of Fortuna Road, Yuma, AZ.

The initial investigation revealed that the bicyclist was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes on Fortuna Road.  An uninvolved vehicle traveling northbound, swerved to avoid colliding with the bicyclist.  The driver of a red Polaris RZR traveling behind the uninvolved vehicle was unable to change lanes in time and struck the bicyclist.

The bicyclist, identified as Ramon Alvarez-Cerrillos, 75, of Yuma, AZ was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

This case remains under investigation. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this collision.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the community to ride safely and obey all traffic laws when operating a bicycle.
