A charity motorcycle ride started by Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels with a few dozen riders in 2013 is expected to have more than 500 participants when its 9th annual ride happens next month.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Charity Ride has turned into one of southeast Arizona’s most popular events, drawing local as well as out-of-town participants. This year’s event on Nov. 6 will feature motorcycles, Jeeps, and side-by-sides for planned rides throughout the county while taking part in a scavenger hunt.

According to Dannels, the cost of the ride is wholly underwritten by Cochise County businesses. That means 100 percent of the registration fees and rider donations will be split among four charities: The Butterfly Club, Coronado Lobo Club, Hearts of Gould Animal Haven, and American Legion Post #52.

Dannels credits his staff with building a high-interest event which grows in popularity each year.

“The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Charity Ride is an excellent example how the dedicated men and women of this office are committed to supporting our communities and non-profits who continue to help those in need,” said Dannels. “I am so proud to serve an office and community that collectively shares a common mission and truly makes that positive impact.”

This year’s event will start in the morning with a Display of Support for public safety personnel via a drive on Fry Boulevard through the heart of Sierra Vista. Riders will then split up for various on-road and off-road treks while participating in a scavenger hunt. The ride ends at Lawley Nissan with drawings for more than $20,000 in raffle prizes.

Registration is now open for the 2021 event at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cochise-county-sheriffs-charity-ride-2021-tickets-168129163855  Event t-shirts can also be ordered via that site, but those wanting to ensure their shirt is available for the ride must register by Oct. 23.

The 2020 ride resulted in $10,000 donations to three local non-profits: Shop with a Cop, Real Wishes Foundation, and Velo Vets of Sierra Vista.
