A man was taken into custody by El Mirage Police officers on New Year’s Eve at approximately 8:30 p.m, after multiple 911 callers reported several gunshots fired in the area of the 13400 block of north A Street.

Witnesses reported they observed Michael Sais, age 27 from El Mirage, shoot multiple rounds from a rifle into the air which is against the law due to Shannon’s Law. Fourteen-year-old Shannon Smith was killed by a stray bullet in Phoenix in June 1999. Arizona’s Shannon’s Law makes it a felony to discharge a firearm randomly into the air.

Officers surrounded the residence and observed several spent rifle shell casings on the porch near the front door of the home Sais was living in.

During the investigation, officers learned Sais fired 21 rounds from his AR-15 rifle. There were no reported injuries or property damage. Officers seized the rifle and shell casings evidence and booked Sais into jail on one count of Disorderly Conduct Involving Weapons and one count of Unlawful Discharge of Firearm within City Limits.
