Tucson Police Department officers are investigating the death of a pedestrian, 20-year-old Thomas James West.

According to the Department, on January 8, 2022, just before 8:00 a.m., officers and Tucson Fire personnel were dispatched to the 600 block of W. Valencia Rd. for a report of a collision involving a pedestrian. TFD transported Mr. West to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries upon arrival. After arriving at the hospital, Mr. West passed away from his injuries.

Detectives determined that Mr. West was attempting to cross Valencia Rd. from south to north. Mr. West was not in a crosswalk when he was struck by a red 1995 Ford F150, that was traveling westbound in the curb lane. After striking Mr. West, the Ford immediately stopped and cooperated with the investigation.

An officer for the DUI Unit responded to the collision and determined that the driver of the Ford was not impaired at the time of the collision. Midblock crossing by Mr. West is the major contributing factor in the collision, according to the Department.

Police say this is an ongoing investigation, and no citations or charges have been issued at this time.
