Ducey Blasts Anti-Israel ASU Group, “Discriminatory Behavior Cannot Be Tolerated On A College Campus”

Governor Doug Ducey generally ignores when conservative students on Arizona’s college campuses are discriminated against, but on Thursday he blasted a group of anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian supporters at Arizona State University (ASU).

Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) claims to be “dedicated to educating the campus & community of the injustices in Palestine of past & present times” and was protesting the recent evictions of Palestinians from East Jerusalem. However, as part of their protest they chanted and then tweeted: “From the river to the sea Palestine will be free,” which is as Democratic State Representative Alma Hernandez noted, an often-repeated call for the elimination of Israel rather than a peaceful two-state solution.


“This is shocking. This kind of discriminatory behavior cannot be tolerated on a college campus or anywhere. Arizona continues to stand with Israel,” tweeted the Governor, responding to an initial tweet from Hernandez, a Jewish legislator and activist from Southern Arizona.


Hernandez responded in a tweet, “Thank you for your unwavering support of Israel I hope that my bills on protecting the Jewish community will make it to your desk soon!”

SJP responded to the Governor and the Representative, “SJP ASU organized a demonstration today to condemn Israel’s violent occupation, the unjust arrests of the Saliyha family, and the demolition of homes in #sheikhjarrah. We will continue to advocate for Palestine and condemn our university’s role in the Israeli occupation.”


This is hardly the first instance where far-left groups targeted conservatives or policies associated with conservatives, although most instances pass without the Governor involving himself. Recently the Governor was silent when famed legal scholar, Professor Jonathan Turley, called on ASU officials to muster the “integrity and courage” to reaffirm publicly, the right of Kyle Rittenhouse to attend classes in person.

Turley’s comments followed an announcement by SJP, MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx de Aztlán), Students for Socialism, and the Multicultural Solidarity Coalition, of a rally aimed at keeping Rittenhouse, who was enrolled in ASU’s online classes, off campus.
