Golf course superintendents are increasingly relying on smart, AI-powered irrigation systems, satellite imaging, and soil-moisture sensors that gather weather and soil data and use it to optimize irrigation schedules. Smart irrigation means that each turf area gets the amount of water it needs only when necessary. The system calculates how much water is required based on humidity, radiation, turf stress, and other factors, so that each gallon that can be saved is indeed saved. Subsurface drip irrigation, which delivers water directly to the grass roots, also helps save up to 40% of the irrigated water. Replacing old turf varieties with drought-tolerant grasses such as Bermuda or Zoysiagrass is another measure increasingly adopted by golf courses to cut water consumption. According to the USGA, grassing changes can deliver water savings of 25% or more.
