A man, who violated an Order of Protection, is dead after a standoff with Gilbert Police Department officers at an apartment complex early Saturday morning.

According to the Gilbert Police Department, the situation began on the evening of Friday, April 8, 2022, around 7:50 p.m., when officers responded to The Flats at SanTan apartment complex at 2550 S. Santan Village Parkway for a call where a woman reported her 27-year-old ex-boyfriend, who she had a court-ordered Order of Protection against, was on his way to her residence at the apartment complex.

The 27-year-old man had previously been arrested for an incident unrelated to the woman and as part of his release, had an ankle monitor from the Maricopa County Superior Court which he had removed prior to making his way to the victim’s apartment.

A Gilbert officer arrived at the woman’s apartment and as he spoke to her, the man approached her apartment. As the officer made contact with the man, he fled from the officer with a handgun in his hand. The officer lost sight of the man and a perimeter was established around the apartment complex.

After a thorough search of the complex, with the assistance of the Arizona Department of Public Safety Air Unit the man was located on the premises. The handgun was visible and next to the subject during the entire time.

The Gilbert PD SWAT team responded to the location and, through their negotiators, attempted to get the man to surrender. These negotiations continued utilizing numerous resources to try to bring a peaceful resolution to this incident. After three hours of negotiations, at 2:05 A.M., the man presented a threat to the officers and Gilbert officers shot the individual with less lethal and lethal rounds. The man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on-scene. There were no injuries to Gilbert officers.

Responding officers had their body cameras on at the time of the shooting.
