An accident involving seven vehicles led to the closure of all lanes of Charleston Road outside Buena High School in Sierra Vista on Friday, but none of the 14 occupants needed to be transported to the hospital.

According to reports from the scene, the melee started around 3 p.m. when a Honda minivan rear-ended a Honda Civic. The two drivers pulled their vehicles to the shoulder, clearing the roadway.

But as those drivers were inspecting the damage, two other vehicles collided with each other. Then in a split second, a third collision occurred when a Kia SUV read-ended a Toyota Camry.

Investigators determined the force of the impact from the Kia sent the Toyota into the oncoming lane, right into the path of a Chevrolet Traverse whose driver did not have time to avoid a collision.

Although none of the drivers or passengers were seriously injured, six of the seven vehicles sustained serious damage. The number of disabled vehicles led to the closure of Charleston Road for 90 minutes.

Two drivers were cited at the scene for failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
