Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office detectives have identified the suspect in heinous murder that occurred in July as Jesse Farmer, of Phoenix.

Farmer is currently incarcerated on an unrelated offense in Maricopa County, as well as the main suspect in another homicide in Phoenix currently being investigated.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, on July 2, 2022, at approximately 4:45 p.m., deputies responded to a call at the Black Canyon City Family Dollar store where reports that a man had been shot and involved in a single vehicle collision on Old Black Canyon Highway had taken place.

Once deputies arrived at the store and to the scene of the collision, it was confirmed the shooting took place in the parking lot of the Family Dollar store and the victim, Cody Cooper, drove away and got into a single vehicle
collision where he drove off the roadway and up an embankment.

Mr. Cooper, age 32 of Black Canyon City succumbed to a single gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision.

With little to go by, and input from several locals with limited information, Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) Criminal Investigations Bureau took over the investigation.

After reviewing video footage from inside the Family Dollar, conducting interviews of numerous individuals, and spending countless hours on the investigation, YCSO detectives were able to identify Farmer, age 32, as the killer.

Farmer will remain in custody in Maricopa County and will also be booked on the charge of First-Degree Homicide.
