On Monday, Governor Katie Hobbs announced that she has finally found a replacement for her Communications Director, Murphy Hebert. Herbert left the administration after Hobbs’ former and disgraced spokesperson Josselyn Berry was forced to resign for a violent message on Twitter sent the same day of the tragic mass shooting in Nashville by a transman.

Hobbs has tapped Christian Slater, most recently a spokesperson for failed Florida senatorial candidate Val Demings. Demings was handily defeated by Sen. Marco Rubio by a whopping 16 points in the 2022 election.

“I am confident that Mr. Slater’s wide breadth of expertise will be an asset to our growing team,” said Hobbs in a press release. “We are excited for him to get started and continue sharing the vision of this administration all across the state.”

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Hobbs administration and for the opportunity to partner with a team of dedicated and accomplished public servants,” said Slater in the same press release. “I can’t wait to get to work with Governor Hobbs as she addresses the pressing issues facing Arizona by tackling the water crisis, improving education, lowering costs, growing jobs and building an economy that works for every Arizonan.”

The fact that Hobbs was forced to look out of state, and that Slater would face a steep learning curve about the issues facing Arizonans was not lost on local political consultants. One politico, Brain Anderson, tweeted in response to the Slater announcement:

“Democrat @KatieHobbs could not find a single human being in the entire state of Arizona willing to serve as her communications director,” and “@KatieHobbs is 4 months away from asking the @NASAHubble telescope for help finding agency directors.”

In March, Hobbs was forced to seek the resignation of Berry after she tweeted an image that appeared to advocate gun violence toward people she deemed to be “transphobes” mere hours after a transman killed three adults and three young children at a Christian school in Nashville.

In February, the Arizona Senate rejected the nomination by Hobbs of Dr. Theresa Cullen to head up the Arizona Department Of Health Services. The Senate’s vote was interrupted by Minority Leader Sen. Senator Raquel Terán, claiming the governor rescinded the nomination.
