Walmart Shoplifting Suspect Dead In Tempe Police Officer Involved Shooting

A shoplifting suspect is dead after being shot by a Tempe police officer on the night of May 9.

According to a statement released by the Tempe Police Department, officers responded to a Walmart in the area of Elliot Road and Priest Drive at around 7:30 p.m. for reports of a shoplifting incident. Tempe police dispatch broadcasted an Attempt to Locate regarding a shoplifting that had just occurred at the Walmart located at 1380 West Elliot Rd.

The suspect was described as the Native American male in his mid-20s. Additional information was provided to the dispatch and broadcasted that employees at the store tried stopping the suspect; however, he refused to comply, and fled the scene on foot.

The suspect reportedly stolen an item and shortly after was observed near a canal path as officers checked the area. The officer found him walking along a nearby canal path behind the Walmart. A physical confrontation occurred between the officer in the suspect, and an officer involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was provided medical treatment at the scene by officers and transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Officers did locate a sharp object near the suspect’s body.

No officers or citizens were injured during the incident.

The officer involved in the shooting is a 20-year veteran of the Department. His body-worn camera was activated during the incident.

In accordance with departmental policy, the officer was placed on administrative leave.
