Phoenix police are investigating a fatal traffic collision that left a jaywalker dead and the man who hit him behind bars.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers responded to serious vehicle collision in the area of 43rd and Glendale Avenues. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle stopped in the roadway with a man, later identified as 35-year-old Ricardo Martinez, on top of the vehicle with obvious signs of trauma. The fire department responded and transported the Martinez to the hospital where he died from his injuries. The driver, later identified as 47-year-old Matthew Rhoades, remained on scene and did not suffer any injuries.

After reviewing the evidence and speaking to witnesses detectives learned Martinez crossed Glendale Avenue mid-block and was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by Rhoades. Rhoades was evaluated by a DUI Motor officer who determined Rhoades displayed signs of impairment.

Rhoades was later booked for Aggravated DUI for driving impaired with a suspended driving privilege.
