Suspected Seattle Smuggler Arrested For Deadly Cochise County Collision

A Seattle man is in custody in the wake of a deadly accident that occurred on Sunday in the area of Kil Ranch Road and Ghost Town Trail in Elfrida.

According to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident at approximately 9:00 a.m., on June 11. When officers arrived on the scene, they found an overturned truck and several people were injured. Deputies began lifesaving measures and requested assistance in locating two other men, who were seen walking away from the wreckage in the general area towards Sunsites.

At about 9:50 am, deputies and US Border Patrol agents made contact with 29-year-old Keyston Campbell, and another man who were shaken and appeared to be suffering minor injuries.

Campbell claimed that he was not involved in the accident however, he was detained for further investigation.

Two air ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the accident and Arizona Department of Public Safety Troopers and Elfrida Medics responded to assist with traffic and medical service as well.

Investigators determined that there was a total of eight people in the vehicle at the time of the incident, one was pronounced deceased at the scene while two others were airlifted to a Tucson hospital for treatment of serious injuries, and the remainder were turned over to US Border Patrol for processing.

Campbell was arrested and booked into the Cochise County Jail on charges of Smuggling, Aggravated Assault, and Second-Degree Murder.

Campbell remains in custody on a one-million-dollar bond.
