Police Arrest Three For Abuse Of Quadriplegic Adult At Phoenix Hospital

Phoenix Police Department detectives arrested three men for their involvement in the abuse of an adult quadriplegic patient at a valley hospital which happened on July 14, 2023.

Luis Garcia, age 53, Eric Espinoza, age 39, Kalen Powell, age 37, were indicted by a State Grand Jury on criminal adult abuse charges on August 21, 2023. On August 25, 2023, detectives arrested and booked the men into Maricopa County Jail.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on July 22, 2023, at about 1:00 p.m., officers responded to a vulnerable adult abuse call and spoke with the victim and witnesses related to the call. During the initial investigation, officers collected video evidence from the victim’s mother showing his condition on the day of the incident.

Detectives learned staff from the hospital pushed the victim out of the building in a hospital wheelchair and left him lying on the ground at a nearby park. The victim’s mother came to the park and called 911 to have the Phoenix Fire Department respond. The victim was taken to a different hospital where he was admitted for follow up care.
