Phoenix Police Shoot Stabbing Suspect

Phoenix Police detectives are investigating an officer involved shooting.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on December 16, 2023, around 2:00 p.m., officers responded to several calls of a fight near 44th Street and McDowell Road. The fight developed into a man being stabbed. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Alton Tungovia, left the area east on McDowell Road.

Officers contacted Tungovia near 49th Street and McDowell Road who was holding an object in his hand. When officers gave him commands, Tungovia yelled back at officers and continued to walk away weaving in and out of oncoming traffic. One officer used a pepper ball launcher to get Tungovia to stop. Tungovia allegedly continued to walk away east on McDowell Road toward a strip mall parking lot with the object still in his hand. An officer discharged his gun hitting Tungovia. Tungovia was transported to the hospital where he later died.

The victim of the initial stabbing received serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital.

The investigation continues.
