Two people were fatally shot and another injured in a shooting that took place Sunday night near 4th Street and Pecan Road.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, on December 17, 2023, just before 7:30 p.m., officers responded to a call of a shooting near 4th Street and Pecan Road. Officers arrived and found two men lying next to a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. One man died on scene. He was identified as 24-year-old Jovanni Burciaga. The other man was transported to the hospital where he later died. He was identified as 16-year-old Mario Banegas. While officers were on scene, they received additional information over the radio that a man showed up at a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound that may be related to the shooting.
Homicide detectives believe that Burciaga and Banegas drove to a home near 4th Street and Pecan Road. There was an exchange of gunfire. The three men were all struck by gunfire. Burciaga and Banegas did not survive.
The third man was transported to the hospital before police arrived, with non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation remains ongoing.
