Former Arizona Speaker of the House James “Jim” Patrick Weiers passed away on Friday at age 70. Weiers was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 1994 and served in the Legislature until 2013.
Weiers served two terms as Speaker of the House during his tenure. His brother, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, served alongside his older brother in the House as well.
The elder Weiers is survived by his wife, Gina, four kids, 12 grandchildren, his stepmother, JoAnne Weiers, and four sisters.
Mayor Weiers released a statement on Friday evening announcing his “beloved” brother’s passing on X.com:

It is with great sorrow that I share the passing of my brother, Jim Weiers, who passed away earlier today. Jim and I enjoyed 67 years together as brothers. I, and my family, are blessed to have had Jim with us for these years and all the memories we created.
While Jim’s life was more than his service to the state, for those who knew him in this context, I ask that you remember and celebrate Jim’s service to our great state, as well as his exemplary leadership as the former Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives.
It is because of Jim that I entered politics. He and I served together in the Arizona House of Representatives for 8 years. There we joined our colleagues in making many difficult decisions to help Arizona recover from the financial hardship caused by the Great Recession of 2008. His love for public service and ability to work with anyone – Republican or Democrat – laid a foundation for helping Arizona recover stronger than ever. It is also because of Jim’s encouragement, support and motivation that I decided to run for Mayor of Glendale.
Throughout his life, Jim demonstrated high ethics and integrity, and was motivated by the honor of serving others – servant leadership is something we should all strive for. There was no challenge too great nor issue too small for Jim to tackle.
Jim is survived by his wife Gina, 4 kids, 12 grandchildren, our stepmother JoAnne Weiers, my four sisters and me.
I ask for your prayers for Jim’s family. Memorial arrangements will be shared once finalized.
In Your Service,
Mayor Jerry Weiers
A number of Arizona politicos also expressed their sadness at Weiers’ passing.

I will miss Jim Weiers and his stories. Even just a few months ago he was teaching me something new with an old story. A good and decent man — he will be missed by many, and he improved the lives of millions of Arizonans who will never know his name. Rest in peace dear friend. https://t.co/2V5TWuxps7
