Detectives are investigating circumstances leading to the shooting death of two men near downtown Phoenix Saturday morning.

On August 30, 2025, at about 7:43 a.m., Phoenix police officers responded to the area of 1000 North 22nd Place for a shooting. Officers located two men nearby suffering from gunshot wounds. The Phoenix Fire Department responded and took both men to the hospital with critical injuries. At the hospital, medical staff attempted lifesaving measures on 28-year-old Malik Hopkins; however, he soon died as a result of his injuries. Medical treatment was continued for several hours on 37-year-old Warren Middlebrooks until he also passed away as a result of his injuries.

Detectives learned that Middlebrooks and Hopkins were engaged in a physical fight and during the fight a handgun and a knife were produced. Hopkins sustained both stab wounds and gunshot wounds whereas Middlebrooks sustained gunshot wounds. It is believed both men were fighting over the same handgun and had shot each other during the altercation.
