Woman Accused of Shooting 4-Year-Old Boy in South Phoenix Arrested

29-year-old Joanna Chalup Cortez turned herself in on Wednesday in connection with the shooting of a toddler in Phoenix.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers arranged for Chalup Cortez to surrender which occurred on January 7, 2026.  Chalup Cortez was booked on multiple charges related to the investigation to include aggravated assault and discharging a firearm at a residence.

On January 6th around 12:19 p.m., officers responded to an unknown trouble call near 2900 East Wier Avenue. When they arrived on scene, officers located a toddler with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Phoenix Fire arrived on scene and transported the toddler to the hospital with serious injuries.

Chalup Cortez left the scene before officers arrived.
