Two speeding vehicles triggered a six‑car, chain‑reaction crash Saturday evening in central Phoenix, sending multiple people, including three juveniles, to the hospital.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, Phoenix Police officers responded to a collision that happened just after 7 p.m. near 16th Street and Thomas Road, when a 26-year-old man driving a silver Toyota Tacoma was heading northbound at a high rate of speed. He failed to stop for traffic waiting at the red light and collided with two vehicles that were stopped at the intersection.
A second speeding driver, a 33-year-old man in a silver Pontiac G6, was traveling northbound behind the Tacoma and also failed to stop. He stuck the rear of another stopped vehicle, pushing it into an oncoming car in the southbound lanes. The driver of the Pontiac suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.
Impairment and speed are believed to be factors for the driver of both the Tacoma and the Pontiac.
The drivers and passengers in the other involved vehicles, including three juveniles ages 4, 6 and 8, were all taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No signs of impairment were found in any of those drivers.
Charges for both speeding drivers are pending the completion of the collision reconstruction and toxicology results.
