Two Tucson Police Department officers are being hailed as heroes for their response to a shooting that left 10 people were wounded in downtown Tucson.
The shooting occurred early Sunday morning when a gunman opened fire in the crowded entertainment district located on East Congress Street and North 6th Avenue at about 2:00 a.m.
Officers on foot patrol heard gunshots and responded to the area, according to the Tucson Police Department (TPD).
As officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a male suspect running away. Officers gave the suspect multiple commands before an officer fired his department-issued firearm and hit the suspect.
Officers immediately provided medical aid to many of the victims, according to witnesses.
“In gathering camera footage for the police investigation, we noticed an amazing act of bravery from TPD,” wrote employees at Empire Pizza. “Under a minute from when the injury seemed to occur, two TPD officers were on the scene and immediately rendered first aid to the victims. They ran into the line of fire immediately and selflessly rendering assistance.”
Tucson Fire personnel arrived and transported all the suspect and victims to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect is in critical condition.
