Early Friday, a fight involving a group led to a man being stabbed to death.
According to Commander Mercedes Fortune of the Phoenix Police Department, at about 4:20 a.m., near 27th Avenue and Indian School Road, officers responded to a report of an aggravated assault. When they arrived, they located an adult male, later identified as Christian Yepiz Fonseca, who had sustained stab wounds. Fire personnel transported Christian to the hospital in extremely critical condition. He did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Officers were directed to a nearby hotel where the suspect was detained.
Based on witness statements, video evidence, and other information, detectives learned that the suspect had been cornered and assaulted by Christian and five other unidentified men. During the assault the suspect stabbed Christian.
The suspect was not booked on homicide charges; however, he had an outstanding out‑of‑state arrest warrant for homicide and was booked on that warrant.
The investigation remains ongoing.
