Aztec Volleyball Downs South Mountain CC to Open ACCAC Play

TUCSON –The Pima Community College volleyball team (5-4, 1-0 in ACCAC) opened ACCAC conference play on Friday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The Aztecs defeated South Mountain Community College in straight sets 25-21, 25-14, 25-13 for their third straight win.

The first set produced 10 ties, but the Aztecs held a slim lead for most of the game. Freshman Victoria Page gave Pima their biggest advantage of the set as she produced two straight aces as they scored four straight points to take a 9-4 lead. The Cougars scored five of the next six points to cut Pima’s lead to one. With the score tied at 21-21, the Aztecs rallied off four straight points to go up 1-0.

Up 7-6 in the second set, the Aztecs scored four straight points, capped off by freshman Skylar Westburg’s ace to make it 10-6. South Mountain (1-3, 0-1) scored the next point, but Pima got kills from sophomore Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) and freshman Estelle Fetsis (Pusch Ridge Christian) as well as an ace from freshman Alexis Ferbeyre (Pusch Ridge Christian) to make it 14-7. The Cougars never cut Pima’s advantage to less than five points. Fetsis put down the final kill to put the Aztecs up 2-0.

Freshman Amaris Biancuzzo (Mica Mountain HS) put Pima on the board with a kill to open the third set, but she rallied off four straight aces to give Pima an early 5-0 lead. Hutchens’ kill and a couple of South Mountain errors made it 8-0. South Mountain cut Pima’s lead to four points, but the Aztecs scored 10 of the final 12 points to secure the win. Sophomore Breeze Schelter, who is a setter, had three kills down the stretch. Hutchens contributed with a kill and a block for the final boost.

Schelter finished the match with 25 assists, three aces and four kills while Westburg posted eight kills. Hutchens had eight kills and three blocks and Page closed out the match with seven kills and three blocks. Freshman Leah Stoneking (Catalina Foothills HS) added 21 digs and two aces.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium next Friday, Sept. 11 when they host No. 11 ranked Mesa Community College. First serve is at 7:00 p.m.
