Big money is coming to Arizona courtesy of national unions, attacking Republican legislative candidates, and trying to help Democrats capture both chambers of the State Legislature.
What is notable about the ads is that they are attacking Republicans on the issue of taxes, by making the claim that Republicans oppose tax cuts for Arizona families, and implying that Democrat candidates would support them.
The attacks from Arizona Prevails Action are completely bogus, according to critics who point out that all of the Republican incumbents being attacked voted for record tax cuts that benefited Arizona families, while the Democrat incumbents being supported voted against those same tax cuts.
“Republicans just passed record tax cuts, over Democrat objections and multiple vetoes from Katie Hobbs, so running an ad claiming Republicans oppose tax cuts is not just dishonest, it assumes voters are stupid.” observed one GOP activist who was angered by the effort.
It may be impossible to know how much money is being spent on this effort until the dust settles, but early reports were that as much as $500,000 was headed into Arizona to help Democrats take advantage of a favorable environment. Added to the existing financial advantage held by Arizona Democrats, the challenge for Republicans will be to stretch their dollars and do their best to keep up, while battling advertisements that invert the truth.
Republicans being attacked with video ads are Shawnna Bolick, Carine Werner, Matt Gress and Pamela Carter, Michele Pena, Rachel Keshel and John Winchester, Julie Willoughby, Kevin Hartke and Janet Weninger, and Chris King.
