
Phoenix Police detectives are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened early Sunday morning near 99th Avenue and Thunderbird Boulevard.
On October 13, 2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m., officers responded to the area of 4900 W Thunderbird Road for a call of a shooting. The caller said someone was shot in a vehicle and the suspect was in a gray car still in the area. When officers arrived on scene, they were directed by a witness to a man entering a grey Nissan vehicle.
Officers attempted to stop the man, who began driving away slowly but failed to stop. The vehicle fled westbound on Thunderbird Road, and a pursuit was declared. The Air Unit assisted with the pursuit, which ended in the area of 9900 West Thunderbird Boulevard. The man parked the Nissan in the drive-through of a business and began walking away. Officers pulled their patrol vehicle behind the man and began giving commands then the man retrieved a firearm from his person and pointed it at both officers, resulting in one of the officers firing his duty weapon and the man shooting himself.
Officers moved in and rendered aid until Peoria Fire arrived on the scene and took over lifesaving measures. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries.
Other officers who additionally responded to the original shooting investigation located an adult male with at least one gunshot wound. The man was pronounced deceased on the scene.
