Early Voting Shows Mesa Voters Rejecting Spilsbury

UPDATE: Spilsbury has conceded the race.

Early results show voters in Mesa have rejected Councilmember Julie Spilsbury in an historic recall election.

Spilsbury appears to have been defeated by Dorean Taylor in the District 2 recall.

According to AZFree News, “Taylor announced her candidacy in July after Councilwoman Spilsbury faced serious challenges to her self-proclaimed status as a Republican for her enthusiastic endorsements of Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential Election as well as endorsements from prominent Arizona Democrats U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton, Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, and U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego.”

JoAnne Robbins, the Mesa resident who filed the recall petition in January cited Spilsbury’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris over President Donald Trump for her decision to lead the recall.

“To use her position and to then come out and stump for those who are against our values, that’s a total bait and switch and a very big disappointment,” Robbins told the Arizona Republic.

In early results, Taylor has 8,219 votes to Spilsbury’s 7,352.

Spilsbury’s term ends in January 2029. If she loses the recall election, Taylor would fill the remainder of her term.
