On Friday, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of a suspect, Gregory Hamann, in a cold case. The 60-year-old Hamann was booked on one count for the first-degree murder of Joseph Montgomery on Aug. 6, 1984.
According to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, earlier this year, additional scientific testing and forensic analysis provided critical new evidence that led investigators to identify Hamann.
Hamann remains in custody on an $800,000 bond and has preliminary hearings scheduled for early next week.
Sheriff Mark Dannels stated, “Our investigators have remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice for the victim and their family. The advancements in forensic science have provided us the tools to bring resolution to cases once thought to be unsolvable. This arrest represents years of hard work, dedication, and collaboration among our investigative team, our County Attorney’s Office, and forensic partners.”
According to KOLD, the murder of Montgomery happened at a building in Sierra Vista off Theater Drive, where people had an apartment and used the bottom floor as a hair stylist business. Joseph, a stylist, was found dead in a pool of blood after being shot.
The Sheriff’s Office believed Hamann was committing a robbery that turned deadly.
