Half a dozen Arizona Democrats recently received the ultimate progressive endorsement from United States Senator Bernie Sanders.
According to the New York Times, Sanders made approximately 60 endorsements across the country as part of his bid to cement his legacy and build a more permanent progressive movement.
The Bernie Sanders endorsement was celebrated by local Democrats like Jacob Martinez, Lorena Austin, Mariana Sandoval and others.
Sanders and fellow progressive Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC) are considered the de-facto leaders of the far-left spectrum in American politics, and as the Democratic Party shifts further left, their views and endorsements are taking on greater importance.
Republicans also made note of the endorsements because some of the candidates on the list are campaigning as moderates in an effort to win swing districts, and voters may find it hypocritical or dishonest to campaign as a moderate while celebrating an endorsement from America’s leading far-left political figure.
“You can’t pretend to be a moderate or an independent voice when the endorsement you wanted the most, and actually got, was Bernie Sanders,” opined one political observer.
Other Arizona Democrats endorsed by Sanders include State Senator Analise Ortiz, State Representative Brian Garcia, and Tempe City Council candidate Bobby Nichols.
