PHOENIX – On week after he was brutally beaten during a soccer game at a park, a 19-year-old soccer player has died.
Phoenix police are now investigating the case as a homicide.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, on August 6th, 2026, at approximately 8:02 pm officers received a call of an unresponsive 19-year-old man in a field at Sueno Park, located near 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road. When officers arrived, they learned that the 19-year-old, identified as Tumusifu Bazirake, was involved in a soccer game when a fight broke out. During the fight several suspects assaulted Bazirake before running away.
The Phoenix Fire Department responded to the scene and transported Bazirake to the hospital in extremely critical condition.
On Thursday August 13th, 2026, investigators were notified that Bazirake succumbed to his injuries.
His remains were turned over to the Office of Medical Examiner and cause of death is pending an autopsy.
The suspects involved in this homicide are still unidentified and outstanding. Anyone with information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS/ 480-TESTIGO (Spanish).
