TEMPE – An Arizona State hockey player who collapsed while participating in an outdoor exercise Thursday remains hospitalized, the university confirmed.
“The university offers its support for the student-athlete, their family and all our student-athletes during this difficult time,” Chris Fiscus, ASU vice president of media relations, said in a statement Sunday.
Tempe Fire Medical Rescue was dispatched to Sun Angel Stadium, the school’s track and field facility, around 8:30 a.m. Thursday following a report of a “heat-related illness.”
The temperature was approximately 88 degrees in the Phoenix metropolitan area at 8:30 a.m., the dew point temperature was about 66 degrees and humidity was recorded at 46%, according to data collected by Phoenix’s National Weather Service office. On Aug. 20, the National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning that remains in effect until at least Saturday.
ASU’s fall semester began Thursday, the day the NCAA allows college hockey teams to start official activities.
