YUMA — A 54-year-old man left his inoperable vehicle Monday morning and went without food and water for six hours for about six hours near the Kofa Range, about 30 miles north of Yuma.
His wife had stayed behind in their vehicle.
At about 2 p.m., the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received an emergency call and informed the Yuma Sector Border Patrol about the stranded travelers. The man was complaining of chest and abdominal pains.
Members of the Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) team received air support from the Marine Corps Air Station Yuma Search and Rescue team in order to locate the couple.
The couple, both U.S. citizens, were transported to a local hospital for further observation.
The BORSTAR unit was created because of an increasing number of injuries to Border Patrol agents and migrants near our nation’s borders. BORSTAR members frequently render aid to border crossers and others in distress, providing them with medical care and lifesaving aid.
