PHOENIX – On Thursday, Representative Bob Thorpe called for ASU President Michael Crow to step down if he refuses to intervene on behalf of Rae’Lee Klein, who is under pressure to resign from her position as station manager of the student-run Blaze Radio. Klein was fired for posting a link to a story about Jacob Blake, whose death sparked the recent riots in Kenosha.

“Shame on Arizona State University and President Michael Crow for the firing of Rae’Lee Klein from her position as station manager of the student-run Blaze Radio. I believe that the Board’s action was a clear violation of Ms. Klein’s 1st Amendment rights to freedom of speech and freedom of the press, which are protected and guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America,” stated Thorpe, who previously served as the Chairman of the House Higher Education Committee.

“President Crow should immediately correct the Board’s unjustified action by reinstating Ms. Klein and create campus-wide policies to ensure that all ASU students’ constitutional rights are protected, irrespective of their race, gender, or political affiliation,” argued Thorpe.

“If President Crow does not quickly address these problems on the ASU campus, then perhaps he should step down, and the State Legislature should consider whether measures need to be taken to ensure that the university, as well as all other state agencies and institutions, properly safeguard constitutional principles and the rights of students and employees,” concluded Thorpe.
