The United States House of Representatives passed House Resolution 29, also known as the “Laken Riley Act” on Tuesday, which passed with a bipartisan 264-159 vote, including Arizona leaders.
The legislation allows illegal immigrants to be taken into custody if they face accusations of crimes related to stealing, and it’s named after the college student who was killed by an illegal immigrant in Georgia last year.
“In November, President Trump was given a mandate, Congress was given a mandate, and that was to secure our border,” Republican Rep. Andy Biggs said in a video following the vote.
The entire Arizona Republican congressional delegation voted for the bill, as well as Democratic Rep. Greg Stanton. On the Senate side, both Democratic Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego are supporting the bill.
“Not only am I voting yes on the Laken Riley Act, I’m cosponsoring the bill,” Gallego tweeted. “Arizonans know better than most the real consequences of today’s border crisis. We must give law enforcement the means to take action to prevent tragedies like what occurred to Laken Riley.”
Arizona Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs also referred to the bill as “an important step forward that will help keep our communities safe and secure our border” in an X post.
The split between Arizona Democrats on the legislation became evident on Wednesday, with Rep. Yassamin Ansari slamming the bill’s proposals.
“The murder of Laken Riley was a horrific tragedy. But the anti-immigrant bill being pushed by House Republicans will do nothing to prevent this kind of violence or reform our broken immigration system,” Ansari wrote in a statement. “Instead, it serves as a license to discriminate against our immigrant communities, including DREAMers.”
“Under this legislation, someone charged-just charged, not found guilty—could be immediately deported. This is a gross miscarriage of justice, and I voted no,” the Phoenix area congresswoman added.
The bill is among the first voted on by the new Congress, which began last Friday. With President-elect Donald Trump set to take office on Jan. 20, it’s likely that he will sign the bill and implement various other tough immigration and border security-related proposals from the executive branch.
Yassamin Ansari is a liar and is corrupt. Her campaign was based on lies about her opponent (I know, typical of democrats) and she does NOT represent the desires of her constituents.
Deport these Democrats along with their pet illegals.
Ansari wrote in a statement. “Instead, it serves as a license to discriminate against our immigrant communities, including DREAMers.” Well if thesystem is broken FIX it instead of whinning about it, BUT and its a BIG but, ENFORCE current laws ans see if that will fix the proble,. Many complain that little is done to fight crime etc, but recent revelations show that a LACK OF ENFORCEMENT is part of the bigger picture.
Here’s a thought… many of those caught in a criminal act have already been deported several times, some as many as eight times or more. Before deporting them give them a good caning. If they return and are caught again, double the caning. If caught again, double it again. They will either get the message or have no skin left on their backs.
I like this idea!
“Under this legislation, someone charged-just charged, not found guilty—could be immediately deported.” Um, yeah, if someone is found to be in the country illegally of course they should be deported, duh. It’s like saying if someone with an outstanding warrant is apprehended for doing anything whatever, they need to wait to be convicted again before being remanded to state custody? Seriously? What’s wrong with these people? The ignorant may be educated, but it’s near impossible to fix stupid.
Right. People who are here ILLEGALLY are not entitled to due process. Deport them all.
taking a read – if you are accused – soooo the fact remains if you are here illegally ; Dreamers (be default of your parents) – don’t do any crime and I think within a short term – you will be given a pass to citizenship ; keep your nose clean – don’t do anything stupid – you’ll be getting a pass to citizenship. If your a criminal in the USA – understand – you’ll be caught and deported if not imprisoned and then deported after you complete your jail time.
This bill is a no brainer to anybody but Yassamin Ansari. Even Hobbs, Gallego and Kelly support it. The people targeted by it have already broken the law by their mere illegal presence. Then they’re arrested for a crime, but that’s not a good enough reason to deport them? How many crimes are enough to get Yassamin Ansari to conclude they should be deported? Why is she supporting them instead of the people of Arizona?
Ask the dips__ts that elected this moron!!! Elections have consequences said everyone.
159 Democrats voted against the Laken Riley Act, no reason to do that other than hate. Hopefully they will never be in power again.
Wow! I thought this bill made sense. But now, I see Hobbs, Kelly and Gallego in support?!
Nobody ever explains how illegal aliens magically make our country better and stronger when they couldn’t even make their own countries better and stronger. Funny how before diversity made us stronger there was less crime, better wages, affordable homes, better healthcare, rigorous education, less social angst, no issues of integration, no fixation on “racism,” more national confidence, and grooming just meant personal hygiene.
Credit where due to Gallego. Critics of this act seem to forget that persons who are here ILLEGALLY are not entitled to the same civil rights which citizens and legal resident aliens enjoy.
No credit to Gallego.
He was all in on open borders just 2 years ago. His whole life has been advocacy for same. Now, he’s had a change of heart? I want to SEE that, not hear that, from him.
